YA articles

I read two articles about teenagers: how to get teen boys to read and teen suicides. The first article is an article close to me because I've been there: it is uncool to read. I never actually read a book until 10th grade, and it was by accident that it happened (long story). I fell in love with the "movie in my head." I do my best now to target boys in particular to help them understand the role that reading plays in their life. I try to be a role model for them in that area. In the second article, it was tough. I have dealt with two suicides in my school in the past two years. This is a huge problem that most people want to dismiss with it being just "drama." People need to be aware of the signs and make sure that it is better to be safe than sorry.

Who are Young Adults?

Starting at age 12, young adults are a wide variety in all directions. It is hard to pinpoint or categorize this age group because of the huge range of ages. Because of this, I tried to interview a wide variety of students: 2 males (9th and 11th grade) and 4 females (9th, 10th, 10th, and 12th). My results are as follows:

Topics: Fantasy, Sports, Romance, Animals, and Vampires

Authors: Stephanie Meyer, J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Stephen King, Nicholas Sparks, and Harper Lee

Favorite Movies: The Hangover, Stepbrothers, The Notebook, New Moon, Saw, Saving Private Ryan, and Gone with the Wind

Internet Reading: Facebook, Foxnews, ESPN, checking E-mail, and Forever 21 (whatever that is)

The boys and one girl stated that video games were a HUGE part of their lives: Call of Duty Black Ops, Halo, MLB the Show, and Battlefield
