YA articles

I read two articles about teenagers: how to get teen boys to read and teen suicides. The first article is an article close to me because I've been there: it is uncool to read. I never actually read a book until 10th grade, and it was by accident that it happened (long story). I fell in love with the "movie in my head." I do my best now to target boys in particular to help them understand the role that reading plays in their life. I try to be a role model for them in that area. In the second article, it was tough. I have dealt with two suicides in my school in the past two years. This is a huge problem that most people want to dismiss with it being just "drama." People need to be aware of the signs and make sure that it is better to be safe than sorry.

  1. I agree that teen suicide MUST be taken seriously. Does your school have a program for suicide risk students? Also, what is the suicide protocol for teachers in Georgia (report to counselor and follow up)?

  2. I teach in Alabama, but yes, we report it to the counselor.
